India accounts for one fifth of maternal deaths globally. One third of women are underweight and malnourished, putting them at risk during pregnancy and birth as blood clotting is less efficient. This risk is compounded by the fact that three out of every five births take place at home relying on relatives or other untrained persons to ensure a safe delivery.
At least 20% of the burden of disease in children below the age of 5 is related to poor maternal health and nutrition in India, as well as quality of care at delivery and during the newborn period.
Maternal malnutrition leads to underweight births. Severely underweight babies are born malnourished, vulnerable to childhood diseases. This can lead to permanent disabilities or persistent ill health compounding the poverty they face.
Through CINI UK’s Adopt a Mother programme, you can help a woman access the basic nutrition she needs during pregnancy and her child’s first two years of life. With your support, she can help her family break the cycle of poverty, malnutrition and ill health.

A trained local health worker, or women’s self-help-group representative, makes regular home visits to the mother and family, encouraging the mother to increase the nutritional value of her diet using locally available produce. She attends the birth, whether it is at home or in hospital, and ensures the baby receives all immunisations and any necessary medical attention during the child’s first two critical years of life.
Throughout the programme, the emphasis is on education and support for the mother and family on health, hygiene and good nutrition and in particular on the promotion of sustainable health practices.
Research has shown that focusing on this critical time period and working with the family is a cost effective approach with a long term impact on the health of the child.
For just £5 per month for 30 months you can ‘Adopt A Mother’. Your support will help a mother during the final 6 months of her pregnancy and the baby’s first two years of life. Just click here for a sign up form (Word document) or here (HTML - in case you do not have Microsoft Word on your computer).
Alternatively, a one off donation of £150 will see a mother from beginning right through to the end of this critical period for her child’s development. Click here to Donate Now online. Alternatively send a cheque to CINI UK, Suite 631, 456-458 Strand, London, WC2R 0DZ.
You will receive photos and reports on the support received by the woman sponsored and news on what is being done to ensure that a firm foundation is laid for the healthy development of her child.
It is important to note that CINI’s policy on sponsorship is totally inclusive. The fact that a mother and her child are ‘adopted’ does not mean that all the other women and children in her village or district are left out. CINI makes sure when it introduces new mothers and children to the scheme, that all pregnant mothers in the local area receive the same support. The ‘personalising’ of the scheme, is designed to give you a unique insight into how CINI’s work in the mother’s local area is making a concrete difference to one mother and her child.
